Best Sewing Patterns to Sew for Summer

A collage of models wearing Tilly and the Buttons summer sewing pattern picks. With the title text 'sewing patterns to sew for summer'

Sewing for the summer season might just be the best time of year to make your own clothes.

There’s something so satisfying about makes you can throw on straight away: breezy dresses, swishy skirts, easy tops and relaxed separates that work for holidays, picnics, garden parties (yes, I'm open to invites) and those rare-but-glorious hot UK days.

If you're wondering which sewing patterns are best for summer, I’ve rounded up some of my favourite warm weather makes. Whether you're a confident beginner looking for an easy first garment or a more experienced sewist planning a handmade holiday wardrobe, these patterns are packed with summer potential.

Think floaty fabrics, comfortable fits, and garments you'll want to wear all season long.

What makes a great summer sewing pattern?

When I’m choosing summer sewing projects, I usually look for a few key things:

  • Lightweight, breathable fabrics
  • Relaxed or easy-to-wear silhouettes
  • Quick-ish projects with satisfying results
  • Versatile pieces I can dress up or down
  • Patterns that layer well for unpredictable weather

Summer is also a brilliant time to experiment with fabric. Cotton lawn, viscose, linen blends, double gauze (my personal fave) and seersucker all shine in warmer weather and can completely change the feel of a pattern.

Leah Top + Dress Sewing Pattern

Leah is one of those magical summer sewing patterns that can completely change vibe depending on which version you make.

If you love clean, minimal styles, you can sew the simple shift top or easy shift dress for an effortless throw-on-and-go outfit. Prefer something softer and more romantic? Add the gathered skirt to create a pretty peplum top or floaty tiered midi dress. There are even optional side ties on the peplum and tiered versions, which add such a lovely playful detail.

The semi-fitted bodice has a slightly A-line shape with bust darts for gentle shaping, while the sleeveless design keeps it cool and comfortable for warmer weather. The neckline and armholes are finished with bias binding for a neat, lightweight finish, and there’s a sweet keyhole opening with a button and loop at the back too.

I think Leah is going to be an absolute summer wardrobe hero because you can sew such different looks from one pattern. The simpler versions would be gorgeous in linen or cotton poplin for everyday wear, while the tiered dress is just begging for floaty viscose on holiday. Copy the co-ord above by pairing Leah with our Winnie barrel leg trousers sewing pattern!

Frida Shirt Sewing Pattern

Frida proves that shirts aren't just for autumn. With its relaxed, boxy fit and dropped shoulders, it's the perfect lightweight layer for summer days and cooler evenings.

This versatile pattern includes a choice of casual short sleeves or long sleeves with cuffs, plus a hip-length or contemporary cropped hem. Classic shirt details such as the button-front opening, two-piece collar and stand, lined yoke and box pleat at the back give it a timeless feel, while the relaxed fit keeps it modern and easy to wear.

I love Frida sewn in linen, cotton lawn or double gauze for summer. Wear it buttoned up with shorts or a skirt, or throw it over a vest top or swimsuit as an easy holiday cover-up.

Esti Co-ord Sewing Pattern

If your ideal summer wardrobe is full of easy co-ords you can throw on in seconds and still feel put together, Esti is such a good choice.

This pattern includes a strappy top paired with wide-leg trousers or shorts, which means you can sew a full matching set or mix and match the separates with the rest of your wardrobe. The top has a chic square neckline, diagonal bust darts for shaping, and straps wide enough to cover a bra – always appreciated in summer sewing. The trousers have a comfortable elasticated waistband with horizontal topstitching, plus options for full-length trousers, cropped trousers or shorts. Optional oversized patch pockets on the bum add a fun detail too.

I love Esti for hot weather because the silhouette feels loose and breezy without being oversized. Sew it in linen blends, cotton poplin or lightweight viscose and you’ve basically got the ultimate handmade holiday outfit.

It’s also a brilliant beginner-friendly sewing pattern because the construction is relatively simple, but the finished result still feels polished and modern.

Skye Sundress Sewing Pattern

Skye is one of those effortless summer dress patterns that looks stylish with very little effort. The relaxed silhouette makes it comfortable to wear on hot days, while the design details keep it feeling special enough for holidays, dinners out or summer events.

The beauty of Skye is that it works in so many different fabrics. A floaty viscose gives it a soft, swishy feel, while cotton poplin or linen creates more structure and shape. It’s the sort of dress you’ll want to wear on repeat because it’s easy to style and genuinely comfortable.

I’d especially recommend Skye if you want a sewing project that feels wearable straight away – the kind of dress you finish and immediately want to put on.

Two side by side pictures of models wearing the Tilly and the Buttons’ Nell sewing pattern.

Nell Blouse + Dress Sewing Pattern

Nell might actually be one of the most versatile summer sewing patterns in the whole TATB collection.

This mix-and-match blouse and dress pattern includes four garment options: a straight blouse, peplum blouse, knee-length dress and midi-length gathered dress. On top of that, you can choose between four sleeve styles – short straight sleeves, bracelet-length sleeves, flutter sleeves or statement puffball sleeves. There’s also a choice of classic button-front openings or faux tie fronts with hidden snaps, plus optional patch pockets on the bodice or skirt.

Despite all those options, Nell still feels approachable to sew. The relaxed-fit bodice with bust darts makes it comfortable to wear in warm weather, and the swishy gathered skirt version is especially lovely in lightweight fabrics.

For summer, I’d personally go for the flutter sleeve or faux-tie-front versions in cotton lawn, seersucker or viscose. The puffball sleeve variation is gorgeous too if you fancy something a bit more statement-making for holidays or summer parties.

What I really love about Nell is how different each version can look depending on your fabric and styling choices. You could easily sew multiple versions and have them all feel completely different.

Two side by side pictures of models wearing the Tilly and the Buttons’ Coralie sewing pattern.

Coralie Swimsuit + Bikini Sewing Pattern

Yes, you can sew your own swimwear! Coralie is such a fun choice for summer sewing because you can create everything from a simple, sporty swimsuit to a ruffle-covered statement bikini.

Created in collaboration with lingerie and swimwear designer Evie la Lùve, this swimwear sewing pattern includes both a one piece swimsuit and bikini options, with loads of ways to customise your make. You can choose between high or low back swimsuit variations, as well as high or low waist bikini bottoms depending on the look and coverage you prefer.

I love that Coralie works whether you want a classic minimalist swimsuit or something a bit more fun and vintage-inspired. The mix-and-match options make it feel really versatile, and sewing your own swimwear means you can choose prints and colours you genuinely love instead of settling for whatever’s in the shops.

This is an improver sewing pattern, but it’s also a brilliant introduction to sewing swimwear if you've been curious to try it. And if you want extra support while sewing it, there’s also the Learn To Sew Swimwear online workshop with Hannah from Evie la Lùve, packed with step-by-step guidance and clever hacks.

Two side by side pictures of models wearing the Tilly and the Buttons’ Luella sewing pattern.

Luella Skirt Sewing Pattern

If summer dressing for you means swishy skirts and elasticated waistbands, Luella is probably going to become a wardrobe favourite.

This pattern includes both midi and maxi skirt options, with beautifully gathered tiers that create loads of movement and drama without sacrificing comfort. The elasticated waistband keeps it easy to wear on hot days, and there are optional pockets too – because honestly, everything is better with pockets.

Luella is surprisingly versatile depending on your fabric choice. Sew it in cotton poplin or double gauze for an easy everyday skirt, or use drapey viscose for a floatier, more boho-inspired look.

It’s also a lovely beginner-friendly project because the construction is straightforward and satisfying, but the finished skirt feels really special.

Two side by side pictures of models wearing the Tilly and the Buttons’ Samara sewing pattern.

Samara Top Sewing Pattern

If you’re looking for an easy summer sewing project (or a last minute holiday make) Samara is such a brilliant place to start.

Designed especially for beginners, Samara is a modern, relaxed-fit top that’s quick to sew and lovely to wear in warmer weather. The easy-fitting bodice with drop shoulders keeps it comfortable and breezy, while the V neckline adds a clean, modern shape without being complicated to construct. The neckline is finished with a facing, giving it a neat finish without any fiddly techniques.

Because the construction is intentionally simple, Samara is ideal if you’re newer to garment sewing or just want a satisfying project you can finish relatively quickly. It also makes a fantastic wardrobe-builder piece because it works with so many fabrics – lightweight linen blends, cotton lawn, double gauze and viscose would all be gorgeous for summer.

I’d especially recommend the cropped or short sleeve versions for hot weather sewing. They’d look perfect paired with jeans, shorts or a swishy handmade skirt.

Don't overcomplicate it

Some of the best summer sewing patterns are the simplest ones. Choose projects you'll genuinely wear rather than saving your fabric for a “perfect” make that never happens (we all do it!).
