Billie sewing pattern design details

Billie is a modern take on the classic sweatshirt, designed with comfort and style in mind.

All versions feature a relaxed (but not oversized) fit, a crew neckline finished with a classic neckband, and a clean, wearable silhouette.

You can choose from multiple style options:

  • Top length finishing at the high hip
  • Mini dress length finishing approx. 10cm (4in) above the knee
  • Straight sleeves in full-length or three-quarter length
  • Statement balloon sleeves with deep cuffs
  • Optional cutaway pockets for the dress version
  • Deep hem band finish for both versions

Billie is designed to feel like “secret pyjamas” — the kind of outfit that looks put-together but feels like loungewear. Comfortable enough for sofa days, but polished enough for going out.

And yes — the dress version has pockets big enough for your phone.

Best fabrics for the Billie sewing pattern

Billie is designed for medium- to heavy-weight knit fabrics with at least 10% stretch.

Great fabric choices include:

  • Sweatshirt fleece
  • French terry
  • Loopback jersey
  • Ponte
  • Double knit
  • Interlock
  • Sweater knits

For cuffs, hem bands, and neckband finishes, you’ll ideally want fabric with at least 20% crosswise stretch. If your main fabric is less stretchy, ribbing is a great alternative for a professional finish.

If you’re sewing the balloon sleeve version in thicker fabric, take care when gathering sleeve heads — your machine may need to work a little harder through bulkier seams.

Is the Billie sewing pattern beginner-friendly?

Billie is designed for confident beginners who are ready to start sewing with knits.

If you’ve made a few garments before, you’re good to go. If this is your first time sewing jersey fabrics, Billie is a great place to start — especially if you choose a stable knit like French terry or loopback.

You’ll be guided through techniques including:

  • Sewing knit neckbands
  • Working with sweatshirt fabrics
  • Gathering sleeve heads (balloon sleeve option)
  • In-seam pocket construction (dress version)

Everything is explained step-by-step with Tilly and the Buttons’ signature photo instructions.

We also have additional tutorials on the Billie support page, including tips for sewing jersey neckbands and working with sweatshirt knits.
